I’ve been sitting on an idea I’d like to bring to life for nearly eight years. I’ve imagined, dreamed and plotted and then I’ve lost confidence in my abilities and not listened to my gut time and time again. In the New Year, this needs to change; it will change!!
Since we moved to Herefordshire, I’ve daydreamed about having a large vegetable plot, orchard, polytunnel and cut flower garden in one of our fields. I’ve planned it out countless times, I’ve costed it up, I’ve gone full speed into deciding layouts and then each time I’ve doubted whether I can do it, is it a good idea, will I manage it on my own?? Now the time has come to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. My youngest starts nursery in February, my eldest goes to preschool five days a week, and finally, I’ll have the opportunity to make my dream a reality.
My main aim is to grow as much food for my family as I possibly can, I’ve done reasonably well up until this point, with the summer months being completely self-sufficient bar some soft fruits, but I want to go BIGGER. I also realise I’m going to get some gluts; it’s bound to happen as even with the best will in the world, I always get my timings wrong, or my plants just like to all come ready at once, regardless! So with this in mind, I’m going to venture into the world of veg boxes for my local community…. Eeek!
Those I talk to seem really enthusiastic about buying from me, so I hope to be able to cater for between 5 and 10 boxes this coming season as a pilot scheme to see how I get on and what the feedback is. I will keep it super local, just to those in my village, as I have no grand plans for world domination and want to focus purely on feeding friends and neighbours with fresh, pesticide-free fruit and veg.
I’m aware of the HUGE learning curve I’m about to embark on; I’m incredibly intimidated by what lies ahead, but I also know that I’ve achieved in the past in both growing veggies and running my own business, so here we go!!
Watch this space for how things develop through 2023 😊
Happy New Year!
Here’s how my tomatoes went down in 2022!
