Through 2019 and 2020 we tackled a whole host of challenges throughout the property but in 2021 it all started to fall into place in the garden. The plans I'd sketched in the years before had become a reality, our dinner plates where jam packed with homegrown produce and I finally felt like I was getting slightly ahead of the bindweed!!!
Due to things like the bindweed, dock and nettles, I'd quickly decided on installing lots of raised beds instead of trying to win the war at ground level. By using fairly high raised beds it gave me the opportunity to put down a good few layers of cardboard and lots of mulch, manure and compost in order to help kill off the perennial weeds that we taunting me.
The first area we did as sleeper beds at it was on quite a significant incline and had a high bank towards the back so needed a fair bit of work to give me level beds. This area was also notorious for becoming water logged which meant we also laid drainage underneath the beds to help take away excess water from there as well as the lawn. Herefordshire is known for having thick clay soil that's incredibly good at holding water and being fairly back breaking to work so another reason to be able to shortcut my way to creating the holy grail of loamy soil.
We went from this...
To this....
I got the greenhouse of my dreams too ...
And then we attacked the bed to the right of the greenhouse in 2021.
This is what it looks like in autumn 2021... still a way to go but the end is in sight!
