What I definitely will NOT be growing again.

Growing your own food can produce the most delicious tasting things that have ever graced your plate, but it can also be seriously challenging to the taste buds and sanity! So every year, I try to make an effort to grow something I've never grown before, sometimes, it's a huge success, and it becomes a regular on the growing list; other times, they've been only good for the compost heap.

Here's a roundup of the 2022 rejections.

1. Spaghetti Squash – One pro for this squash is how quickly it grows and how many fruits you get per plant. Other than that, we all pretty much hated its taste and texture; the local wildlife seemed to enjoy them, though!

2. Mashed Potato Squash – I didn't mind this one too much, but the kids and Mr M hated it. It doesn't have that much flavour, so it relies heavily on your adding it. I'd happily have a bulb of garlic mushed into it and call it a success, but my boys firmly disagree. I kept a few, but it's proven not to be very good for storage, either.

3. Asparagus Pea – Neither tasted of peas or asparagus. The flowers were pretty, but the bean was blooming horrible. No thanks!

4. Purple Knight and White Knight Aubergines – These long thin aubergines aren't for us, the boys found them far too tough, and I found them pretty unexciting, so even though it was an achievement to finally managing

to grow aubergines (after three years of failure), I'm not sure I'll bother again.

5. Ying Yang Beans – It would seem the rabbits love these, as after replanting four times, trying to protect them and only managing to grow one plant and never actually tasting a bean, I'll probably stick to another batch of runners.

There were plenty of things I'll be growing again, too; watch this space for that reveal 😊
